Net
Net play: volleys and overheads
At the net time is short and decisions are simple: a high ball is for finishing, a low ball is for setting up.
Principles
- 1
High ball: finish
A firm volley or overhead into the open court. With your opponent in the middle, use the short angle.
- 2
Low ball: set up
You cannot finish from a ball below the net. Volley deep with control and keep closing in so the next volley comes higher.
- 3
Short motion
A volley borrows the ball's pace. Big swings, like a forehand, cost control.
- 4
Ball at your body: backhand volley
The backhand volley covers the body area better, with almost no motion.
- 5
Lobs: controlled overhead or recover
A short lob is an overhead to finish. A deep lob calls for a controlled overhead, or running back sideways to send another high lob and recover your position.
