Score & momentum

Score and momentum: the mental game

The same shot can be right at 15-0 and wrong on break point. Playing the score and the moment is part of tactics.

Principles

  1. 1

    Big points call for margin

On break point, set point or in a tiebreak, whoever takes risks is closer to missing. Play with margin and make your opponent earn the point.

  2. 2

    Trust the pattern that works

Under pressure, repeat what has worked in the match instead of inventing something new.

  3. 3

    Routine after a mistake

After a double fault or a silly error, breathe and repeat your routine. Trying to "make up for it" usually creates the next error.

  4. 4

Break the rhythm when momentum shifts

If your opponent is on a roll, change the height, spin and pace of your balls instead of trying to shorten points with winners.

  5. 5

    Adapt to the conditions

With the wind behind you, use more topspin and shorter targets; into the wind, the ball drops shorter and you can swing more freely.
